My husband and I checked out the Nemo Outhouse Races and chili cook-off this past weekend in Nemo, South Dakota. It is an annual fundraiser for the Naja Shrine Kids Transportation Fund. The town of Nemo is a special place. It has a couple of small stores and bars, some cabins, a church, a school, a post office, and a volunteer fire department. During the summer it can be busy, and is a favorite stop for those who ATV in the Black Hills. It is also close to the Centennial Trail.
When we first got on scene, it was pretty busy and we were not sure what to do. We started by checking out the outhouses that were to be in the competition.
Next we checked out the chili competition, We found this to be a pretty good deal. For $5.00 a person we got a small cup and got to walk around and sample 16 different types of chili. At the end we voted for our favorite.
Now it was time for the races to begin so we found a good spot. Several times we walked around and checked it out from different angles.
Everyone seemed to be having a great time and the races were really funny. Some of the participants were serious and were out to win. Others just seemed to enjoy the nice atmosphere, great weather, and attention.
During the middle of the races they took breaks and had a scoop race for the kids. There was also a big ball the kids got to roll around in. There were vendors on site, and several times they did raffles to raise more money.
Some of the crowd members dressed up and everyone cheered the participants in the races.
At the end of the day, the winners for the races and chili cook-off were announced. This was a pretty cool event to attend and I love that the money raised went to a very good cause.
