Horsethief Lake

Horsethief lake is 2 miles west of Mount Rushmore on Highway 244 near the towns of Keystone and Hill City. The lake is a popular place to fish, camp, and hike and can be crowded at times. There is a beautiful hike that goes around most of the lake and another hike that leads from the lake to Mount Rushmore. There are a couple of pull out areas to park, and I highly recommend getting out of your vehicle, and enjoying a short stroll near the lake.

There is a campground near the lake which is very beautiful and has 36 campsites.
