Cold Springs School
Cold Springs School was built in 1887 and is one of the oldest log school buildings in South Dakota. It was placed on the National Register of Historic Places in 1973. At one time the school was also a dance hall, meeting house, and church. The school closed for good in 1949 following a major blizzard. The building was set for demolition by the Forest Service, but restored by the Cold Springs historical society. The building is open to the public at 12 pm the 2nd Sunday of each month from May to October, but can be visited anytime. The school is also located right next to the Cold Springs Cemetery.
To get to the school turn off Highway 87 on the road just southwest of the turnoff for Rankin Ridge Fire Tower. The road is called several different names depending on where you look. It could be Cold Springs Rd, Beaver Creek, or Rankin Ridge Rd. Take the road for about 3/4 of a mile ( you will pass through a gate saying you are leaving Wind Cave National Park), and turn onto Flynn Creek Rd. You will go a short distance to the final turnoff to the cemetery and church which is marked. The church is about 1 mile from Highway 87.
