Town of Buffalo Gap

Buffalo Gap is a very old semi-ghost town located in Custer County. It is right off Highway 79 just north of the town of Hot Springs about 9 miles. The town was founded in 1877 and went through a lot including blizzards, droughts, and the town completely burning down to the ground in 1895. After that the town never recovered and was never rebuilt. At its high point there were over 1200 residents, 140 businesses including 17 hotels and restaurants, 9 stores, a bank, laundry services, and 23 saloons. Today everything is mostly closed and there are around 180 residents. The Buffalo Gap Historic Commercial District was listed on the National Register of Historic Places in 1995, and includes 25 contributing buildings. It is a really cool town to just check out especially if you appreciate old buildings.
