The Osprey Trail

The Osprey Trail was appropriately named because ospreys are often seen in the Pactola Lake area. The trail is 2.2 miles that include two loop trails and a spur trail to an overlook.

To get to the trail turn onto Custer Gulch Road which is near the Pactola Visitor’s Center on Highway 385. You need to follow the road for about 1.4 miles before you turn north following the signs to Pactola Campground.  Go all the way through to the end of the campground facility past the fee booth to the trailhead.

The Osprey Trail is maintained for hiking and bicycling. During the summer months, visitors need to purchase a day-use fee in order to park at the trailhead. During winter you need to park in an off parking lot near where they close the campground for the winter. Walk the road to the campground, keeping to the right. The trailhead points the way (About an extra 1/4 mile walk each way).

Loop A follows the lake pretty good. I recommend walking it clockwise for an easier hiking experience.

Beautiful flowers everywhere in the summer.

Had 3 turkey vultures around us that day. No ospreys or eagles, just turkey vultures.

These 2 turkey vultures followed us on the trail.

Now onto Loop B and the overlook.

To get to Loop B and the lookout point take the path to the west - It looks like an off road wider trail. This trail leads to both Loop B and the overlook. Loop B is okay - does not get too close to the lake. The overlook on the other hand is gorgeous - keep walking on the wider path till it ends.

Follows Pactola Lake.
