Sunday Gulch Trail

Sunday Gulch Trail is a 3 mile hike that starts just below the Sylvan Lake Dam in Custer State Park. The trail starts out very interesting and goes about a 1/4 of a mile down a valley through boulders with railings.

The opening to the whole valley - just gorgeous.

The climb down begins.

Neat high boulders and rocks everywhere.

Lots of stairs and railings.

Some sections are harder than others and you have to be very careful of slippery rocks at all times.

Your feet will probably get wet.

Kids love exploring.

We made it to the bottom of the railings. Touch the marker, and back up we go.

There are plenty of rocks to climb and is my favorite trail in Custer State Park. The trail is for the young at heart and an all time favorite for kids. The trail is not accessible for the handicapped and those out of shape. It can also be slippery at times since a small river goes through the trail at sections.  We usually just go to the bottom of the trail until the railings run out and then hike back to the top.

Up we go. This trail can be tiring and hot. Make sure to have water.

If you continue on, the trail goes through a variety of different terrain and can be hot in the summer - make sure to bring plenty of water. This is us hiking the rest of the trail.

To get to the trail park at Sylvan Lake and take the trail that goes around the lake to the back of the dam.  The trail starts below the dam to the West. It is usually closed in winter because of severe ice buildup.
