Mount Moriah Cemetery
Mount Moriah is a cemetery established in 1878 in Deadwood where they buried some of the notable figures of the Wild West such as Wild Bill Hickok, Calamity Jane, Seth Bullock, and Potato Creek Johnny. There is a 2 dollar cover charge but it gives you a good view of Deadwood and is an interesting place especially to those who love history.
A little bit of history and interesting facts about the cemetery besides the famous people buried there -
- The American flag flies over the cemetery 24 hours a day.
- There were 2 cemeteries in Deadwood - The Ingelside Cemetery and Mount Moriah. In the 1880s the bodies at the Ingelside Cemetery were moved to Mount Moriah. Since so many of the graves were unmarked at the time and not moved, it is not uncommon for people today to find remains in their yards if they are moving dirt for any reason.
- The cemetery has many different sections - 1. Potter’s Field where graves of unknown people that were moved from the Ingelside cemetery are buried. 2. Jewish section - where at the time the Jewish community was given more rights in Deadwood and buried here. 3. A Mass Grave site containing several victims from when a lumber mill burned down as the victims slept. 4. Children’s section due to the large number of kids that died from diseases at the time. 5. Veterans section where the Civil War and Indian War veterans are buried.
Reference the cemetery being haunted - There have been reports of people hearing voices, hearing children laughing at the gravesites, and feelings of being watched even though they are alone at the cemetery. There are also reports of people seeing spirits walking around at night and opening gates.
