Hot Springs National Cemetery
Hot Springs National Cemetery was created in 1907 as a burial place for veterans who died while receiving treatment at Hot Springs Battle Mountain Sanitarium. The cemetery contains nearly 1,500 interments, is at the base of Battle Mountain, and each grave is marked by a white marble headstone. There is a 32-foot-tall statute which stands watch over the cemetery’s graves honoring those who died. We saw all types of gravesites marking different wars, and the gravesites are placed accordingly to the times of their death.
The cemetery is located at 500 n 5th Street - on the grounds of the Veterans Affairs Black Hills Health Care System. When we went there, it looked like we were trespassing, but it is open to the public and once you get on the property, the cemetery is behind the police station with a sign stating which way to go.
