The Gordon Stockade Historic Site is located on Hwy 16A just west of the Custer State Park entrance in the town of Custer. The original stockade was built by the Gordon Party in December of 1874, but later destroyed. What stands today is a replica built in 2004 and represents how people in the old days lived and protected themselves against those who did them harm. Visitors can visit the site and learn the history of this era, the stockade, and the Black Hills. The site is open year round, but you need a South Dakota State Park’s pass to visit the site.
