Glen Erin School
Glen Erin is a one-room schoolhouse that is located on Lower French Creek Rd, just east of the town of Custer and south of Stockade Lake. It claims to be the first public school building in the Black Hills and was originally built in 1882 and closed in 1920 - (The Galena Creek School house was actually built in 1877 which was first). The building has been restored by the Custer County Historical Society. They have a new roof and entrance to the building to protect it from the elements, but most of the logs in the side walls and the foundation are original. They added benches and desks to re-create the original atmosphere of the schoolhouse. The schoolhouse is free to visit, and right near the road, but easy to miss if just driving by.
