Flag Mountain Lookout/Fire Tower

Built in 1941 by the CCC at the summit of Flag Mountain, the fire tower was part of a large network of fire lookouts throughout the Black Hills. Only the concrete rock base remains along with an old wooden bathroom on the north side of the hill. This was a very easy hike from the parking lot and when there we saw a gorgeous sunset. We also were the only ones on top to enjoy the views of the surrounding peaks, prairies, and Deerfield Lake.

The tower is about 16 miles west of Hill City. To get there take Deerfield Road about 13 miles and turn north on S Rochford Rd. Go west on Flag Mountain Rd and stay on the road for about 2 miles. (Do not take the Flag Mountain Lookout Road - that does not take you to the top). After 2 miles turn north on road 2 F East. The road is a small one way bumpy road to a top and is about a mile until you reach your destination.

From the parking lot just a little bit of stairs to climb.
