Devil's Bathtub
Devil's Bathtub is a beautiful hike that follows a creek and ends up at a couple of small waterfalls and ponds. It is located in Spearfish Canyon. To find it from Spearfish turn onto Highway 14A (Spearfish Scenic Highway) and go south for about 10 minutes until you see Cleopatra Place. About 1/4 of a mile past Cleopatra Place turn into the parking lot designated for Devil’s Bathtub. This designated parking lot is new as of the summer of 2019. Before, people parked on Cleopatra Place or on the highway, neither of which are allowed anymore. Now the trail follows along the creek from the parking lot going northeast, then you cross the bridge over to the other side to continue the trail. Depending on the season you may have to walk in the creek several times so bring water shoes and a bathing suit if you choose to swim. It is also very crowded in the summer, so plan to go early if you want to hike it. If the parking lot is full, skip the hike - it’s just too congested on the trail. Doing the hike in the winter time is also very pretty and the hike is less traveled and peaceful. This is not an easy hike due to the fact you have to cross the creek and there are no bridges. I highly recommend bringing walking sticks to help you navigate across the rocky creek. Also good hiking shoes is needed, and you need to watch for signs of crossing the creek because at times it is not always obvious.
Start of Devil’s Bathtub - northeast of the parking lot and follow the river and trail to the bridge.
Can see the bridge you cross just up ahead.
On the bridge.
Crossing the bridge to start the trail.
Beautiful flowers along the creek.
Once you go to the right and cross the bridge you start here into the woods.
You cross the creek a lot - if can be very tricky if the water is high.
Rocky trail - recommend good hiking shoes.
When you get to this spot - cross the creek. There is a path that leads you up a big hill that is a animal path, and not the correct way.
Look for signs to cross the creek such as logs, rocks, etc.
You know you are heading the right way when you see this unusual tree.
So many water crossings.
Lots of rocks and roots to climb over as well.
First watering hole - part of a series of waterfalls and pools of water.
This trail is beautiful in the summertime.
A little waterfall for the daring.
Several pools of water to explore.
Usually deep enough for a quick swim.
Lots of places to relax in the water that is safe for kids.
Kids love this hike. It’s easy and fun.
Interesting rocks to squeeze through.
This is the end of the trail - can’t really get past this without really climbing.
Another waterfall.
Found this old piece of wood by the creek. It looked pretty cool.
In the winter time can be a challenge crossing the creek if it is not frozen.
