11th Hour Gulch
11th Hour Gulch is a cool hideaway in Spearfish Canyon that the locals know about. It is a short hike that takes you through a canyon and up some rocks to get a nice view of the river and Spearfish Canyon. It is usually wet and slippery and some of the climbing can be hard for some people. Anyone can follow the path for a bit though and the more adventurous can climb the ladders to get to the view. The hike is short and once the trail runs out just climb to the south to get the view above the road. The pathway is located just east of Savoy (Latchstring Inn) about a mile. The path is almost directly north of where the two huge boulders are in the creek (hard to miss if you are looking for them - pictured). There is a small pullout just south of the trail where you can park. This pullout can usually park up to 4 cars.
From the two large boulders in the water (pictured) - Park just east of that in the turnout - Trail starts just to the north across from the parking spot.
Lots of boulders to step over.
Can be very slippery.
Rocks are very smooth so be extra careful.
Old ladders are used to get to the top. They can be pretty slippery since they follow the river so use caution.
Looking back.
On top of 11th Hour Gulch looking west.
What a view.
Looking out to the east and seeing the small parking turn off.
Really beautiful in the winter, but extra hard to get to sometimes.
Not going any further - extremely icy.
